After reading the Republic

Several pages I feel like worth recording or resonating.

It is indeed a great book, very educational. The greatest part I feel like about this book is that it not only teaches you several lines of truth but inspire you to reflect on all the topics that Socrates had mentioned. Especially when I’m reading this book while taking Philosophy of Translation class, I start to notice how there are phrases that might have different undertone in Chinese than in it’s original language.

For example when they are discussing about if women have the same right and status as men, Socrates asked if women should do the same job guarding the cities as men, and he used the phrase “guard-dog”. It confused me for a while because I can’t decide whether in his opinion “guards” are unnecessary and in lower class of the society structure. In Chinese, “dog” as an adjective have very negative meaning.

What will my city be like if I concrete all my believes and theory?
