Spring festival is the first day of a new year, which is 初一（chū yī), which means the very first day. However, as we usually call it the lunar new year, we are indicating the celebration that happens on the last day of the previous year.
Chinese people like to celebrate it with family and friends, having more people means having a cheerful and lively new year.
In the picture, the 福 was hanged upside down, this is also a traditional. In Chinese, 福倒了 (the Fu is upside down) have the same pronunciation as 福到了 (blessedness have arrived).
The packs on the table are begs of snacks for children. This is a very old brand, and the name of the brand 旺 means having more of all the good things. These snacks are memory of childhoods.

We always have fish for new year dinner and have some fish as left overs for the second day. It means that people will have a wealth next year and all the goods will have remains left.
It’s a traditional that family sit together and make dumplings for dinner, it’s a representative of the sense of family.
The name of the dress is 马面裙 (mǎ miàn qún), a Chinese traditional custom. People wear new cloths and red outfits for new year.
