Happy Children’s day and all about education…

I, as the founder of First Step in Mental Health, are proud to announce that we hosted a collaborative seminar with Oriana Lady’s League, a non-profit organization dedicated to Chinese women, on the topic of parent-child relationships and mental health in Washington. While teenagers are on their path facing the society, there are also several concerns raised among parents. Is academic pressure really the cause of mental health issues? Is it really impossible for children to be honest with their parents? I was honored to be featured as a representative guest speaker to share the perspective that children have on this particular topic with parental figures to better understand parent-children dynamics.

During the sharing session of the event, parents were encouraged to share their thoughts on parenthood, and coincidentally, three of the mothers shared their experience of a so-called “piano obsession.” They explained that due to their disadvantaged upbringing, they had limited opportunities when they were young. However, they all had a strong desire to learn the piano, but the opportunity wasn’t presented to them. Consequently, after having children, they were inclined to let their children learn the piano, in a sense, to fulfill their own dreams.

After the discussion, everyone unanimously agreed with the opinion of one of the mothers: Children are just passing through a stage in their own lives, and one day they will leave their parents’ lives. Parents should give their children the greatest degree of freedom and not limit them. Children should be given the opportunity to explore what they want to do. With this statement, we can conclude this event as a success and give our utmost gratitude to Oriana Lady’s League and all of the participants.
